Pain Management

Effective pain management is an essential part of companion animal medicine. It reduces disease, morbidity, facilitates recovery and enhances the quality of life of our patients. Our pets feel pain the same as you or I, but demonstrate that to us in different ways that may go unnoticed unless it is known what to look for.

The appropriate management of pain requires anticipation and recognition of pain, early intervention and monitoring of the response to the treatments utilized on an individual patient basis. At Juan de Fuca Veterinary Clinic we have a caring and compassionate staff that is skilled in anticipating and recognizing the various signs of pain in order to treat and manager these conditions effectively.

We utilize a variety of safe and effective pain control treatments that encompass short term pain, such as that endured following any painful or surgical procedure, as well as treatments for chronic pain, such as arthritis and degenerative joint disease. We employ a variety of treatment options from nutraceuticals for chronic pain management, to oral medications for short or long term pain, to local anesthetic techniques and injectable pain medications before, during and following surgical procedures to the use of laser therapy for acute and chronic pain conditions. Using a combination of these therapies is most often used for chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis and degenerative joint disease.

We will help you recognize the signs of pain so that you can help us modify your pet’s treatments as needed. We aim to provide you and your pet with quality and compassionate care and ensure that patient comfort is our priority.
